Ahh Dang

So yesterday we had a combined lesson at church for all the adult members. It was a very enthusiastic lesson on debt and getting our finances in order. Our teacher started off by showing the SNL clip with Steve Martin - "Don't Buy Stuff."

It is a good lesson. One that I STINK at. I get motivated to do better but then I fail.

Just two days before this lesson, I went to Nordstroms. A very big mistake. But I never go there. I had ordered some shoes during the Nordstroms Sale but I got the wrong size so I went in to exchange them. The Nordstroms shoe sales people are GENIOUS! They always bring out the shoes you want plus some other colors plus another shoe you might not have tried. And it is always a shoe you want. Dang.

I had heard about these shoes. They are cool. They give a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair of shoes you buy. Pretty cool. Worth buying already. But then I tried them on. Come on. They are comfy. And I need some black shoes. Need. Really I do. The last pair of black casual shoes I had were dr. martens. It's time. Right?
These ones only black.

So I bought them.

But now this financial lesson is getting to me. It won't sink us for me to have these shoes but can we really afford it? Shouldn't I use that money to go toward a car payment or something?

I don't want to return them.

PLEASE! Can I keep them? Just think - it is charitable for me to buy them.

You should buy them and have them give a pair to my child -- size 8.5 womens :)

Annie. You are the best. Keep em. Need a purchase justified? Just call me. I can come up with 10 reasons for every purchase. It is just a skill I have.

That video is hilarious. I think I need to send it to many loved ones.

I am the absolute wrong person to give any kind of financial advice...it gets really foggy in my head when I'm thinking "needs and wants"...but I say you definitely NEED those shoes. Really. Quality, last a long time, and good feeling because you helped someone else. Go for it.

and I think you'll use em, wear em, and love 'em. It's not a frivilous expenditure. It's a need. Needs are justifiable.

See? We're all right. Keep them.

I love them and think you should keep them and not think twice! I am so glad that I was in YW for that lesson - and super glad Josh was home that day! Had he been there, I would be done!

I am waiting for Kenyon's response....

I'll try to fill in for Dad. How many hours did Kenyon have to work to provide those shoes? Are you up to date on your retirement and savings? Is it a priority?

Confessions of a Shopaholic... I have had to cut way back and it sucks. Seriously. But they do look like you. I am either way on this on. Good luck with the decisions. Just think though, total story for your kids as they grow up....
